The northern rock barnacle is a small volcano-shaped barnacle that cements itself permanently to hard surfaces. Once settled it never moves again, feeding by sweeping the water with feathery legs called cirri. Dense bands of it define the mid-shore on many North Atlantic rocky coasts.
