African Bush Elephant

Field profile

The African bush elephant is the largest living land animal, with bulls reaching around three metres at the shoulder and several tonnes in mass. It lives in fluid family groups led by an older female, and depends on daily access to water and very large quantities of browse and grass. It was assessed separately from the African forest elephant in 2021, when both were listed as threatened.
