African Jacana

Field profile

The African jacana is a chestnut wading bird with a blue frontal shield and extraordinarily long toes and claws, which spread its weight across floating leaves. It walks over lily pads picking insects and seeds. Females are larger than males and defend territories containing several males, each of whom incubates and rears a clutch alone.
