Field profile

The African rock python is the largest snake in Africa, a heavy constrictor patterned in irregular brown, olive and tan blotches. It hunts near water and takes prey up to the size of small antelope. Females guard both eggs and hatchlings, which is unusual among snakes.

African rock python mothers guard their young after hatching

Most snakes abandon their eggs. Field observations at a South African site recorded female rock pythons remaining with their hatchlings inside the nest burrow for around two weeks, sheltering them and returning them to cover.
