The alligator snapping turtle is the heaviest freshwater turtle in North America, with three tall keels on the carapace and a massive hooked beak. It sits motionless on river bottoms for long periods, surfacing to breathe every forty to fifty minutes. Overharvest for meat and slow maturity have reduced it across much of its range.
