Animal profile
Ichthyosaura alpestris
The alpine newt is a medium-sized newt, about 8 to 12 centimetres, with a plain orange belly and, in breeding males, a blue-grey flank and a low straight crest. It occurs from lowland ponds to high mountain lakes. In cold high-altitude sites some populations retain gills into adulthood.
