American Coot

The American coot is a dark slate waterbird with a white bill, red eye and lobed toes. It grazes and dives in freshwater marshes, gathering in large winter rafts. Its chicks hatch with bright orange-red plumes on the head and neck, a colour that fades within weeks and that parents use in deciding which young to feed.
