Field profile

The American robin is a large thrush with a grey back and brick-orange underparts, familiar on lawns across North America. It shifts from an invertebrate diet in spring to fruit through autumn and winter. Despite the name, it is not closely related to the European robin.

The robin's head tilt is aiming an eye

A robin cocking its head at the lawn looks as though it is listening for worms. Experiments indicate the decisive cue is visual: the tilt swings one laterally placed eye down to inspect the ground, though hearing also contributes.
