Field profile

Anna's hummingbird is a stocky green hummingbird whose males have a full magenta head and throat. It is largely resident, unusual among North American hummingbirds, and has expanded its range north as gardens and feeders spread.

Anna's Hummingbird

The dive chirp comes from tail feathers

The sharp squeak at the bottom of a male Anna's hummingbird's courtship dive is not vocal. Wind-tunnel work showed it is produced by the outer tail feathers fluttering as the tail is spread for a few milliseconds at high speed.
