Field profile

The Asian longhorned beetle is a large black cerambycid with white spots and banded antennae longer than its body. Larvae tunnel in the heartwood of living hardwood trees, killing them over several years. It arrived in North America and Europe in wood packaging material and is the target of costly eradication campaigns.

Asian Longhorned Beetle

Eradicating this beetle means felling healthy trees

Anoplophora glabripennis larvae tunnel deep in living hardwood, out of reach of surface treatment. The only reliable response found so far is to cut and chip every infested tree, along with apparently healthy hosts nearby.
