Atlantic salmon hatch in fresh water, migrate to sea as smolts, and return to spawn in the river of their birth. Unlike Pacific salmon, a proportion survive spawning and can return to the sea. Wild populations in many southern rivers have collapsed, and farmed fish now vastly outnumber wild ones.
