Field profile

The Atlantic torpedo is the largest electric ray, reaching about 1.8 metres and 90 kilograms. It has a soft, almost circular disc, no denticles, and a pair of kidney-shaped electric organs visible through the skin behind the eyes.

Atlantic Torpedo Ray

The Atlantic torpedo can deliver 220 volts

Its electric organs are stacks of modified muscle cells wired in series, and the discharge is powerful enough to knock down an adult. The weapon and the naval torpedo share a name, and the ray had it first.
