Field profile

The ball python is a small, stout African constrictor named for its habit of curling into a tight sphere when alarmed. It is the most widely kept pet snake in the world, and also the subject of a large ranching trade in West Africa. Wild individuals are largely nocturnal burrow-dwellers.

Ball Python

A ball python can refuse food for months

Healthy ball pythons routinely stop eating for weeks or months, particularly in the cooler dry season and during breeding. The behaviour alarms keepers, but for a low-metabolism ambush predator it is a normal seasonal adjustment rather than illness.
