Black Caiman

Field profile

The black caiman is the largest member of the alligator family and the largest predator of the Amazon basin, with big males exceeding four metres. Its dark, almost black hide gives the species its name. Hide hunting through the twentieth century reduced it drastically before protection allowed recovery.
