Field profile

The blue jay is a large, crested member of the crow family, loud and conspicuous across eastern North America. It caches acorns and other nuts in the ground in autumn and recovers them through winter. Its plumage looks blue but contains no blue pigment.

Blue Jay

The blue jay contains no blue pigment

Grind a blue jay's feather to powder and the blue vanishes, leaving dull brown. The colour is not a dye at all but an optical effect produced by nanoscale air pockets inside the feather barb scattering short wavelengths back to the eye.
