The blue whale is the largest animal known to have lived, with the biggest Antarctic individuals approaching 30 metres. It feeds almost entirely on krill, engulfing whole swarms in lunges that balloon its pleated throat. Twentieth-century whaling reduced it to a small fraction of its former abundance, and recovery has been uneven between populations.
