Field profile

A stout black jumping spider with white or orange abdominal spots and iridescent green chelicerae. It hunts by sight in daylight, stalking prey and leaping onto it. It builds no capture web but spins a silk retreat for moulting and egg-laying.

Bold Jumping Spider

A jumping spider leaps on liquid pressure

Spiders have no extensor muscles at some leg joints. Pressure in the circulating haemolymph straightens the limb instead, which is part of how a jumping spider launches several body lengths onto prey it has already measured by eye.
