Boll Weevil

Field profile

The boll weevil is a small snout beetle whose larvae develop inside cotton squares and bolls. It entered the United States across the Rio Grande in the 1890s and spread across the cotton belt within about three decades. Eradication programmes have since removed it from most of the United States cotton-growing area.
