Animal profile
Mallotus villosus
Capelin is a small smelt-family fish that forms enormous schools in cold northern seas. It is the key forage species linking plankton to cod, seabirds and whales across the North Atlantic. In parts of Newfoundland and Iceland it spawns by rolling onto gravel beaches in the surf.
