Animal profile
Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris
The capybara is the largest living rodent, a barrel-bodied semi-aquatic grazer that commonly weighs 35 to 66 kg. It lives in groups near permanent water and feeds mainly on grasses and aquatic plants. Its eyes, ears and nostrils sit high on the head, so it can stay almost entirely submerged while watching for predators.
