The cave bear was a large European bear with a steep, domed forehead and broad grinding molars, comparable in size to a large brown bear. Enormous accumulations of its bones fill caves across Europe, deposited over thousands of years of hibernation deaths. It disappeared around twenty-four thousand years ago.
