Field profile

The Chilean devil ray is a large mobulid, reaching over three metres across, that gathers seasonally around seamounts. It filter-feeds on plankton and small fish and spends much of its time far below the sunlit layer.

Chilean Devil Ray

Devil rays dive nearly two kilometres down

Satellite tags fitted to Chilean devil rays near the Azores recorded repeated descents past 1,000 metres, the deepest close to 1,900 metres. The rays carry a network of blood vessels around the brain that appears to buffer it against the cold.
