Field profile

A ground-dwelling South American tarantula, long the most widely kept species in the pet trade. Females grow slowly and live for many years; males mature in a few seasons and die shortly after. It shelters by day and ambushes insects at night.

Chilean Rose Tarantula

A moulting tarantula sheds its fangs too

Moulting replaces far more than the outer shell. The shed skin carries away the lining of the fangs, the book lungs, the foregut and part of the reproductive tract, which is why a freshly moulted tarantula cannot feed for several days.
