Coconut Crab

Field profile

The coconut crab is the largest land-living arthropod, reaching a body mass of around four kilograms and a leg span approaching a metre. It is a terrestrial hermit crab that abandons the borrowed shell habit as an adult and instead hardens its own abdomen. Adults are nocturnal scavengers and opportunists, feeding on fallen fruit, carrion and, occasionally, coconuts.
