Common Kestrel

Field profile

A small falcon with a rufous back and long tail, familiar for hovering over grassland and motorway verges. It feeds mainly on voles and other small mammals, with insects and small birds taken opportunistically. It nests in cavities, cliff ledges and old crow nests rather than building its own.
