The common snapping turtle is a heavy freshwater turtle with a rough carapace, long tail and a small plastron that leaves much of the body exposed. It is an opportunistic omnivore taking plants, invertebrates, fish and carrion. In water it is retiring; on land, where it cannot retreat into its shell, it defends itself.
