The common vampire bat is a small leaf-nosed bat that feeds entirely on the blood of birds and mammals, most often cattle. It walks and runs competently on the ground on folded wings and elongated thumbs, an unusual skill among bats. Colonies typically hold tens to hundreds of individuals in a shared roost.
