Field profile

A small brown or green frog with a pointed fleshy snout, found in the temperate rainforests of southern South America. It was collected by Charles Darwin during the Beagle voyage. Populations have declined sharply, with chytrid fungus and habitat loss implicated.

Male Darwin's frogs raise tadpoles in their vocal sac

The male guards the clutch until the embryos move, then swallows them into his vocal sac, where they develop for weeks and are eventually released as fully formed froglets from his mouth.
