The deathwatch beetle is a small brown wood-boring beetle whose larvae attack partially decayed hardwood, particularly oak. It is a serious pest of historic timber-framed buildings and church roofs in Britain. Adults tap against wood to locate mates, producing the sound that gave the species its name.
