The Mojave desert tortoise spends the great majority of its life underground, emerging mainly to feed on spring annuals and to breed. It is protected as Threatened under the United States Endangered Species Act. Populations have declined sharply through habitat loss, disease, raven predation on juveniles and vehicle impacts.
