Diamondback Terrapin

Field profile

The diamondback terrapin is the only North American turtle that lives its whole life in brackish coastal marsh, between fresh water and the sea. It has concentric diamond-shaped rings on the carapace and pale, dark-flecked skin. It feeds mainly on marsh snails, crabs and bivalves.
