Field profile

The dire wolf was a large American canid, similar in length to a big grey wolf but heavier, with a broader skull and stouter teeth. More than three thousand individuals have been recovered from the asphalt seeps at Rancho La Brea. It disappeared around thirteen thousand years ago.

Dire Wolf

Dire wolves were not close cousins of grey wolves

Ancient DNA published in 2021 showed the dire wolf diverged from the lineage leading to grey wolves, coyotes and dogs several million years ago, with no sign of interbreeding. Its resemblance to a grey wolf is convergence, and it has been moved to its own genus.
