The domestic cat descends from the African wildcat, Felis lybica, and was drawn into human settlements by the rodents that fed on stored grain. It remains an obligate carnivore with a hunting repertoire largely unchanged by domestication. Free-ranging and feral cats have a substantial documented effect on small vertebrate populations, particularly on islands.
