The chicken descends principally from the red junglefowl of South and South-East Asia, with some genetic contribution from grey junglefowl. It is the most numerous bird species in the world by a wide margin, with a standing population in the tens of billions. Chickens retain a complex vocal repertoire and social structure from their forest-dwelling ancestor.
