Animal profile
Anas platyrhynchos domesticus
Most domestic ducks descend from the mallard, with the Muscovy duck forming a separate domestication from a South American species. Breeds range from the upright egg-laying Indian Runner to heavy meat types such as the Pekin. Domestic ducks retain the mallard's waterproofing and dabbling feeding behaviour but have largely lost flight.
