Animal profile
Capra hircus
The domestic goat descends from the bezoar ibex of the Zagros mountains and adjoining ranges. It browses shrubs and coarse vegetation rather than grazing turf, which lets it use land unsuitable for cattle or sheep. Goats are among the most widely kept livestock in dry regions and are also a well-documented driver of island vegetation loss.
