Animal profile
Cavia porcellus
The guinea pig is a domesticated South American rodent, kept in the Andes for food for thousands of years and as a companion animal elsewhere since the sixteenth century. It is neither a pig nor from Guinea. Guinea pigs are highly social, vocal, and born precocial, with fur, open eyes and the ability to eat solids within days.
