The one-humped dromedary exists today almost entirely as a domestic animal; its wild ancestor is extinct. It carries loads, provides milk and meat, and tolerates water and heat conditions that would kill most large mammals. Australia holds the world's largest free-ranging camel population, descended from animals imported in the nineteenth century.
