Field profile

The eastern box turtle is a small, high-domed land turtle of eastern North American woodland, marked with orange or yellow blotches on a dark shell. It is omnivorous, eating fungi, berries, worms and carrion. Individuals live for decades and stay within small home ranges for their whole lives.

Eastern Box Turtle

The box turtle can shut itself into a box

Most turtles pull in and hope. A box turtle does better: a hinge across the lower shell lets the front and back panels swing up against the carapace, sealing the animal inside a closed case that a raccoon or fox cannot open.
