Field profile

The eastern diamondback is the largest rattlesnake, a heavy-bodied pit viper marked with pale-edged dark diamonds. It shelters in gopher tortoise burrows and stump holes in fire-maintained pine woodland. Populations have declined sharply with the loss of longleaf pine habitat.
