The Egyptian fruit bat is an Old World fruit bat that roosts colonially in dark caves, unlike most of its relatives, which roost in trees. It feeds on ripe fruit, nectar and leaves, and disperses seeds over considerable distances. Colonies can number in the thousands and are noisy with social calls.
