Eurasian Eagle-Owl

Field profile

One of the largest owls in the world, with a wingspan approaching two metres, orange eyes and long ear tufts. It nests on cliff ledges and in quarries rather than in trees, and takes prey ranging from beetles to hares and other raptors. Its deep territorial hoot carries several kilometres.
