Field profile

The Eurasian spoonbill is a tall white wading bird with a black spatulate bill tipped in yellow, and in breeding condition a shaggy crest and a yellow patch on the breast. It feeds in shallow water on fish, insects and crustaceans. It recolonised parts of northwestern Europe during the twentieth century after long absence.
