The Eurasian water vole is a stocky riparian rodent with a blunt muzzle, small ears and a furred tail, often mistaken for a rat. It digs burrow networks in soft banks and feeds mainly on waterside grasses and sedges. In Britain it has undergone one of the steepest declines of any native mammal.
