Field profile

The false gharial, or tomistoma, is a large freshwater crocodilian with a long, slender snout and a total length that can exceed four metres. It occupies lowland peat swamps in Southeast Asia, a habitat being converted rapidly. Females build mound nests of peat and leaf litter.
