Ferret

Field profile

The ferret is a domesticated polecat, kept for at least two thousand years to drive rabbits from burrows into nets. It has an elongated body suited to tunnels, an obligate carnivore's short gut and a habit of sleeping for much of the day. Ferrets are distinct from the black-footed ferret, a genuinely wild and endangered North American species.
