Field profile

The fisher is a large forest mustelid of North America, closely related to martens. It is one of the few predators that regularly kills porcupines, and it can rotate its hind feet nearly backwards to descend trees head-first. Trapping removed it from much of the northeastern United States before reintroductions restored it.
