Drosophila melanogaster
Drosophila melanogaster is a small yellow-brown fly of about three millimetres that breeds in fermenting fruit, where its larvae feed largely on the yeasts. It completes a generation in roughly ten days at 25 degrees Celsius. Since about 1910 it has been the central animal of experimental genetics.
