Galápagos giant tortoises are a complex of closely related populations, treated by most authorities as a dozen or more surviving species across separate islands and volcanoes. They are among the longest-lived vertebrates and the largest living tortoises alongside the Aldabra. Threat status varies by population, from Vulnerable to Critically Endangered, and several are extinct.
