Gastric-brooding Frog

Field profile

A small aquatic Australian frog discovered in 1972 and last seen in the wild in 1981. It brooded its young in the stomach and gave birth through the mouth, a reproductive mode unknown in any other animal. Two species existed; both disappeared within about a decade of description.
